There is a curious report from the past that my family had hosted George Washington after his presidency. Doing a little research on geography, George’s travels, and other historical notes, I am putting forth the following. My relative Jacob Roudabush (1752-1837) was born in Pennsylvania and traveled considerably, finally ending his journey in New Carrollton, Ohio. It apparently was this Raudenbusch that went to Virginia and planted his family there for a while in Rockingham County with his wife Anna Rickstacker. This Jacob Raudenbusch is most likely the same Jacob Rodpouch that served in the York County Militia in Dover Township under Captain John Sharp in 1787 and 1788. A simple change in last name is understandable since his father Henry Raudenbusch disinherited two of his sons for serving in the Revolutionary War.

Jacob Raudenbusch owned a house at “the sign of the Cross Keys” in Rockingham County. Today there is road- Virginia Route 276 which runs a short distance between Spotswood Road and Interstate I-81. Jocob and his wife were involved at Frieden’s Church – and today Frieden’s Church Road intersects with Cross Keys Road.

George Washington had traveled through the area on September 29th, 1784- having stayed at Brock’s Gap which was about 12 miles from Rudibort’s. Measuring distance on the map places Jacob Raudenbusch’s home about 12-14 miles SSE of the Brock’s Gap. On the afternoon of the 29th Washington had passed through the area having dined with my relative prior to passing to Brock’s Gap later in the evening where he spent the night. This information is taken from “Washington After the Revolution” by William Spohn Baker- page 16.

This Jacob Raudenbusch had a son Jacob Roudabush which stayed behind in Rockingham County which is my great – great – great grandfather via Peter W. Roudabush / Robert Trenton Roudabush / Phyllis Roudabush Habersack to me. The junior Jacob stayed in the area and is buried in Elkton Cemetery about 12-15 miles from Cross Keys.
