Habersack History
You are visiting a work in progress that has taken several years to compile so far. Many steps of progress have been made with many to go. Many thanks go to Dr. Ralph Habersack in Germany- an accomplished geneaologist and professional translator. This effort would not have happened without him. Thanks to Helen Roudebush Lonsdale in Colorado for the Roudabush information.
The last names of interest are Habersack and Roudabush. The Habersack history’s earliest member has been recorded in the late 13th century, and I have Roudabushes as far back as the 16th century. When you see a number preceding the name, this is the indication of number of generations removed from the originally researched ancestor- so for example I am 9 generations removed from Kilian Habersack:

There is more information emerging. There is a record of another Habersack in the early 1200’s. This record details my lineage:
-
- Kilian Habersack, 1715-1769 in Engelhelms, Germany. In Lutter, Germany 2.5 miles west of Schmalnau there are many early records of Habersacks. From 1710 to 1728 a Kilian Habersack and his wife Anna Maul had at least nine children, with one of them being named Johannes. Kilian’s father was named Johannes, but nothing else is known. The name Kilian may have come from Ireland, where a bishop named Kilian came from Ireland to Wurzburg and was murdered in 689AD. This bishop was made the patron saint of the Wurzburg diocese and the patron of wine farmers. This name is mostly found only in the Wurzburg area and uncommon.

Early History of Habersacks
All of the Habersack families originate in the area of Germany at their earliest. The earliest Habersack records appear in Germany - a Johan Haversac lived in Hamburg in the year 1272. Thilo Haversack is mentioned in the town records of Braunschweig in 1306. Canellen Haversackes in Neuhaldensleben/Saxony in 1330. Henslinus Hawersak 1413 in Saaz/Bohemia. As I have found in my maternal parentage, name spellings change according to phonetics and convenience. There is every reason to believe that variants such as Haversack, Haversac, Habersackin are in some form related, as they show up later in geneological records than Habersack. If anyone has these early Habersacks, please email me.
An early record of a Habersack comes from the era of Maximillian II, Holy Roman Emperor in the 16th century. In a sideline to history, a Hans Habersack is mentioned in the years around 1554-1574 of Vienna, Austria. During the reign of the Habsburgs of Austria, the Habersack family was tied by marriage to the royal family, as well as a family named Buschbacher. The distance between the families in Europe may have it’s roots in the 30 Year’s War and differences in faiths of the families.
The Maryland Habersack familys’ immigrant ancestor Christian Habersack came to the US on July 3, 1884 to Baltimore from Bremen on a German ship called the “Hohenzollern” with his sister Dorothe. Christian was 14 and his sister was 16 at the time. There is every reason to believe that they made the trip alone. They had an older brother named Carl Habersack that came to the US through New York City on the “Westphalia” on April 12, 1881 and are related to the Habersack families in Western Maryland. From my records, these are the only children of Johannes Habersack (b. 1831) to come to the United States.
My GreatGrandfather Christian Habersack was listed in Baltimore as a police officer in the late 1800’s, and later owned a tavern in Baltimore’s Highlandtown area. The building still survives and has had varied usages as a bar and most recently as a thrift shop.
This branch of the Habersack family came from Lieblos, Germany (now called Gruendau) in the state of Hessen. Christans only son Henry Conrad Habersack was employed with the Baltimore City Fire Department until his retirement in 1964. Henrys’ second son LeRoy Christian Habersack served in the US Armys 3rd Armored Brigade, Company “B” occupational forces in Germany during the US Korean Conflict, then worked for the State of Maryland as a land surveyor, having surveyed most of the land that many of Maryland’s major traffic arteries were built upon. LeRoys second son, Michael Habersack is the author of this history.
With reference to Germany, several US Habersacks came from Fulda, several from Frankfort, and several from Lieblos. All these locations are in the state of Hessen- Frankfort is the capitol of Hessen; Lieblos is 15 miles northeast of Frankfort, and Fulda is 15 miles northeast of Lieblos. It is very likely that all Habersack families having their origin in this area are distantly related. The earliest record of a Habersack coming to the United States is in the early 1700’s- Michael Habersack settled in the area northeast of Philadelphia, PA. There is another Henry L. Habersack that fought in the Civil War, but is most likely related to Dr. Ralph Habersack.
