Notes Particular to the Roudabush Family
Much of this information was compiled by the late Jessie Roudabush Price of Stanley, VA (thank you for the afternoon my wife an I spent) and Helen Roudebush Lonsdale, HLonsdale @aol.com. Military information has been compiled by Robert Hume Moore of Page County (thank you!).
The Koontz family purchase land from Lord Fairfax in Virginia on an uncertain date. Jim Snyder brought cherry seeds from the western US after the 1849 gold rush, and planted them on the farm, and the name was subsequently called “Cherry Hill Farm.”
Major Ashby Roudabush had a dam built by his son Miller R. to power the mill at Newport, VA. Miller also ran the mill. The mill eventually burned, and Miller R. built the dam at Luray. Robert Trenton Roudabush was a mill worker for Major.
Lula Roudabush cared for the two ailing Snyder men, which may have spelled their names “Snider” at one time. Jim Snyder’s tombstone reads “Snyder.” I have seen the small cemetery of Jim Snyder and his brother on the grounds of the farm in Stanley, VA.- the stones are in good shape and very readable.
Roudabush tombstones can also be found at a cemetery in Funkstown, MD., which is south of Hagerstown, MD. The are located in the back of an old church.
Elizabeth Koontz passed along a bible and siz goblets to a “Fritz”, grandson of Paul Roudabush, and are living in Roanoke, VA.
Daniel Roudebush, Born 1749 Pennsylvania, USA Died 10/10/1804, Clermont County, Ohio Married Christina Schnebly 1774 in Maryland, USA Served for the Maryland Militia in the American Revolution His twin brothers, Michael and Henry, Jr. also served in the Revolution. Daniel was disinherited by his father who was a pacifist (Mennonite?). Members of the Roudabush and Ruebush families continued in the pacifist tradition, and left for Indiana, and others served for the south in the Civil War. Members of the Clermont County, Ohio branch participated in the War of 1812 and the Civil War as well as WWI and WWII, having left the pacifist part of the church before 1774.
There has also been a repeated story of a Raudenbusch/Rouda/ebush farm involved in the battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War, but to date, these stories have not been substantiated.
My Family had many Civil War enlistees:
Joshua Calvin Suthard (my bloodline and maternal great great grandfather) Co H 33rd VA Inf.
John H. Suthard Co H 33rd VA Inf (his brother)
John Hiram Roudabush 14th VA Cav. (Co I?)
James J. Parks 97th VA Militia- later 10th VA Inf.- deserted
George William Koontz Co. H 33rd VA Inf. (brother of Eliz. Koontz- married to P.W. Roudabush- brother of John H Roudabush)
Martin Van Buren Koontz Co. H 33rd VA Inf. (brother of Eliz Koontz)
Reuben Koontz Co. D 7th VA Cav (Brother of Eliz. Koontz)
John D.M.Dovel Co. D 7th VA Cav (Brother-in-law of Eliz. Koontz)
Issac Newton Koontz, Co. D 7th VA Cav. (Uncle of Eliz. Koontz)
The 33rd Virginia Infantry Co. H. was part of the “Stonewall Brigade” and nicknamed the “Page Grays”. The Co. D 7th VA Cav. was also called
the “Massanutten Rangers”.
I have been to visit the cemeteries in Virginia and the family farm “Cherry Hill” in Stanley, Virginia. The home is still in excellent shape, and the mortar in the bricks on the front porch still bear the signatures of many old relatives. It was the custom then to write names in the mortar in courting times, and these pencil scribblings have survived all of these years outside in the elements. There are also many Roudabush members buried in Graves Chapel Cemetery. I have more pictures on request.
